![]() Korg trimmed the OASYS and came up with Kronos and it became a bit hit. It didn't pick up because it was $8000-9000 so only folks like Jordan Rudess could afford one. At one point, Yamaha decided that musicians don't do sound design and ditched the entire hardware/emulation platforms, replacing all of them with romplers for 10 years. ![]() MODX, Montage, etc are all trimmed down versions of these boards. It's a ground-breaking stuff IMO and confirms that the Montage/MODX platform is really powerful and adding a VA-style of control to the interface would be possible through a firmware update if it is kind of possible now through a performance and control assignments.Ĭheck out Yamaha EX5 and MOTIF plug-in boards. What's pretty interesting about it is there are many single-cycle waveforms in that library which allows for creating multiple performance templates where working only through knobs approximates a Virtual Analog behavior. Thanks to anotherscott (who posted this in a Gerslutz thread), I've discovered a recently released library that I think I may purchase. The internal filter simulations are fantastic IMO, as are the modulation options and the effects, some of which use the Virtual Circuitry models, which makes me think adding a virtual analog stuff would be almost trivial and I still hope they can add it through a firmware, the same way they recently added the FM-morphing stuff which I find fantastic!ĭo you have any recommendations for vintage analog-style synth libraries? I'm also interested in analog synth sounds and think it's a bit of a pity they didn't include a VA (virtual analog) functionality to it, something similar to their reface CS. I have also downloaded the Bosendorfer sound and it's also an excellent addition to the CFX but since I haven't used this keyboard for acoustic piano stuff, I'm not sure how good those are in a band situation. The free Chick Corea Rhodes sound-pack from Yamaha is really great and I like it more than the stock Rhodes performances. Used it mainly for Rhodes (works surprisingly well with the synth keyboard and I'd say I prefer it this way compared to a hammer action), pads and synth leads. I purchased my MODX6 to jam/gig with some friends and it served me well before Covid. What do you guys use your Montage/MODX for? I'm very used now from my other synths to use aftertouch for expression. The differences: on the Montage the memory for user samples is larger (1.75 GB vs 1 GB), there are more controller knobs (with circular LED-s to denote the current value) and faders, the keyboard is of better type and supports aftertouch, there's a small ribbon, also the DAC and ADC on the Montage are supposedly better with higher sample rate, there are more line outputs and they are balanced. To my understanding they have the same sound engine and CPU, the same 5.67 GB wave ROM and sounds. ![]() I was wondering what the exact differences are between a Montage and MODX. I have even programmed my own sounds on it, although I rather use it more for the embedded performances that are terrific. In the meanwhile I also purchased analog/hybrid/digital synths (Behringer Model D, Novation Peak, ASM Hydrasynth) and learned the principles of synthesis, how to make my own patches, and after I went back to the MODX it was certainly much more intuitive to me. For the money it's a killer instrument without a competition, I'm pretty happy with it! I've previously complained about how non-intuitive it is but I was coming from digital pianos with simple interfaces. ![]() I have a Montage 6 black and another white. 70 fx, big modulation matrix.” - $349.99.So you own a MODX. “35 GB content, 3,700 presets and 15 instrumentsįM, spectral, wavetable, virtual analog and granular synthesis. For gigs where you don’t bring it, grab the laptop and use what controller is available.įor those who are Halion 7 users the Montage Plug-in of course is less exciting. I can already see the benefit of having a Montage setlist all worked out and being able to take the Montage with or leave it home. I would expect it probably will require an elicensing scheme. I’m pleasantly surprised to see an FM, AN, AWM synth from Yamaha with a big step into a macOS/Win plugin as well (likely built by Steinberg). Of course that turned out to be several Roland boutique-like instruments rather than the “Motif” successor. In 2015 when Yamaha had teased the reface line I had speculated that with processing power experiencing a significant jump from the days of PLG cards or the EX5 that Yamaha would be returning to a multi engine flagship - hopefully offering FM, AN, VL and AWM engines.
